Meaning of the Name Yashar’el (𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 | ישראל)

Yashar’el — written in Paleo-Hebrew as 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 and in modern Hebrew as ישראל — is the original form of the name most often translated in English as Israel. Its deeper meaning reveals a powerful covenant identity and divine calling.

Etymology and Meaning

The name is formed by combining two Hebrew words:

1. Yashar (𐤉𐤔𐤓 | ישר) – upright, straight, righteous, or direct.

• This word expresses the idea of walking a straight path — living justly, faithfully, and in alignment with the ways of Yahuah (The name of The Most High/Father/God).

2. El (𐤀𐤋 | אל) – Mighty One, God.

• A title used throughout the Scriptures to describe the Creator, Yahuah (The name of The Most High/Father/God).

Together, Yashar + El = Yashar’el (𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 | ישראל), which means:

• “Upright with El”

• “He who strives to walk upright with the Mighty One”

• “Those who are righteous before Elohim”

Scriptural Significance

The name Yashar’el was first spoken by Yahuah (The name of The Most High/Father/God) to Yaaqov (Jacob) after he wrestled with a divine messenger: “Your name shall no longer be Yaaqov, but Yashar’el, for you have striven with Elohim and with men and have prevailed.” – Genesis 32:28

From then on, Yashar’el referred not just to one man but to his descendants — a people chosen to walk uprightly before Yahuah (The name of The Most High/Father/God) and reflect His character to the world.

Why We Use “Yashar’el”

We choose to use 𐤉𐤔𐤓𐤀𐤋 (Yashar’el | ישראל) instead of the later English form “Israel” because:

• It preserves the true meaning and purpose of the name — a people called to walk uprightly with Yahuah (The name of The Most High/Father/God).

• It reconnects us with our covenant identity and calling.

• It honors the original language and heritage of the Scriptures.
